The UN: Problem or Pathway for Freedom and Democracy?

On-site
Discussion

Can the UN serve as a platform to defend and advance democracy or is it beyond repair?

As authoritarian regimes grow in number and influence within the organization, misusing the UN to bolster their international legitimacy, the UN is often seen as absent and ineffective in supporting freedom and democracy.

This international round table will open with short inputs and move into an open dialogue on whether feasible and credible pathways exist to counter authoritarian influence and narratives at and through the UN. Proposals such as the appointment of a UN Special Rapporteur on Democracy or the creation of a UN Parliamentary Assembly will be considered.

Key questions include: How does authoritarian influence at the UN materialize? To what extent does the UN promote democracy? What changes are needed? How can they be achieved? What is expected from democratic governments? How viable are ideas such as an Alliance of Democracies or a democratic caucus at the UN?

The goal is to foster an honest, solution-oriented exchange among global freedom defenders, challenging assumptions and shaping ideas for regaining democratic initiative at the UN. The discussion will take place under Chatham House rules.
