Pre-Event: Symposium “Echoes of Empire: Soviet Monuments and the Machinery of Disinformation”
Over two days, the symposium will bring together German and international historians, legal scholars, artists, cultural practitioners, as well as political decision-makers to discuss a particularly sensitive question: how to deal with the difficult legacy.
Through lectures, discussions, and case studies from various countries, the legal and historical dimensions of these monuments will be examined. The focus will be on their role as sites of remembrance, but also on their misuse for spreading disinformation in current political conflicts. Another emphasis lies on international experiences: How have other societies dealt with comparable legacies of Soviet rule?
The symposium aims to foster interdisciplinary exchange and open up new perspectives.
It is organized by the Ukrainian Institute in Germany, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Berlin, the Polish Institute Berlin, the Embassy of the Republic of Estonia in Germany, the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia in Germany, the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Germany, and the Lithuanian Cultural Institute. It is supported by the German Foreign Office.
