An der Ruine - an art installation at Anhalter Bahnhof

On-site

Once one of Europe's largest railway stations, Anhalter Bahnhof used to connect Berlin with the world. During the Nazi era, it became a site of forced separation: countless citizens forced to flee Nazi Germany left from here to seek refuge in exile. By 1943 it had become one of three sites in berlin of deportation to extermination and concentration camps on the east. In divided Berlin, the station fell into disrepair until it was demolished. Today, only the ruins of the entrance portal remain – a silent witness to the eventful and often forgotten history of this place. The art installation refers to this history and at the same time connects history with the present, inviting visitors to reflect on contemporary and historical loss of homeland, flight, exile and belonging. The installation will open on 14 November 2025 as part of Berlin Freedom Week and will remain on display until March 2026. The installation is an initiative of the Exilmuseum Berlin Foundation and marks the start of a series of public art interventions planned for Anhalter Bahnhof.
