BAB School Cinema with the film “Bornholmer Straße”

On-site
Filmscreening

The Berlin Commissioner for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship invites school classes from grade 8 onwards with their teachers to the school cinema. The film “Bornholmer Straße”, which tells the story of Lieutenant Colonel Harald Jäger (played in the film by Harald Schrott) and the surprising turn of events at the Bornholmer Straße border crossing in the last hours before the fall of the Wall, will be shown.

On November 9, 1989, SED Politburo member Günter Schabowski unexpectedly announced at a press conference that travel restrictions for GDR citizens would be lifted. Only a short time later, the first East Berliners gathered at the Bornholmer Straße border crossing. Dramatic hours began. While Harald and his colleagues were still waiting in vain for instructions from their superiors, the situation escalated: more and more people streamed to the border crossing and demanded to leave. Under enormous pressure, Lieutenant Colonel Jäger finally decided to open the border.

After the film, students will have the opportunity to ask questions to contemporary witnesses and screenwriters Heide and Rainer Schwochow as well as historian and Deputy Director of the Berlin Commissioner for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship, Dr. Jens Schöne.
