Write to a Journalist Behind Bars: Solidarity from Berlin
More than 30 journalists are currently imprisoned in Azerbaijan amid an unprecedented crackdown on independent media. “Write to a Journalist Behind Bars” brings some of their stories to Berlin and invites visitors to turn solidarity into a personal act.
The interactive exhibition presents portraits and short biographies of around ten imprisoned journalists from different independent media outlets and journalistic communities. Visitors can learn about their work and current situation, choose a journalist and write them a personal letter of solidarity. Letters can be written in Azerbaijani, English, German, Russian or Turkish. We will seek appropriate ways to share these messages with the journalists and preserve the original letters for them.
For journalists who are largely isolated from the wider public, receiving a message from someone they have never met can be a meaningful reminder that their work and situation have not been forgotten.
The exhibition and letter-writing space will be open from 11:00 to 17:00. At 12:00, a short official opening will be held to highlight the situation of imprisoned journalists in Azerbaijan and the importance of international solidarity.
Event language: English; letters can be written in Azerbaijani, English, German, Russian or Turkish.
