Value-based democracy in Germany – from the head to the heart
The protection of democracy and freedom concerns us all. On November 9 in particular, the question arises of how the lessons of history can be applied to the present. That is why the Jewish association WerteInitiative is focusing on this topic and inviting guests to a high-profile panel discussion as part of the first Berlin Week of Freedom: How can the humanistic values of the German consitution hold society together? How do they create a common emotional basis and a sense of belonging for all citizens?
The dry term “constitutional patriotism” must be filled with both meaning and emotion. Instead of defining the nation by descent and origin, an enlightened view bases coexistence on shared values. These values are based on the universal principles of the German constitution: freedom, equality, and the rule of law.
The event is the 12th part of the discussion series “360° – Securing Jewish Life and Democracy.”
