November 9, 1938: The November Pogroms and Their Aftermath
The event focuses on the November Pogroms 1938 in Berlin, often reduced to the image of burning synagogues. This time, the emphasis is on the subsequent escalation: the mass arrests of Jewish men, their deportation to concentration camps, and the Nazi regime's attempt to force the Jewish population into emigration through intimidation and extortion. Using recent research and biographical case studies, the dynamics of this wave of repression are made visible.
This event is organized by the Freundeskreis Yad Vashem Berlin. The expert speaker is historian Dr. Susanne Heim, whose research focuses on persecution and forced emigration. Dr. Kim Wünschmann, Director of the Institute for the History of German Jews, will also speak. The event will be moderated by Anne Weininger-Lepper, Education Officer at Freundeskreis Yad Vashem e.V.
