„Look at this city…“- Walking tour of the government district
“Look at this city...” – we take former governing mayor of Berlin, Ernst Reuter, at his word and embark on a city walk of the Berlin government district. We look back at Cold War Berlin, Ernst Reuter, Willy Brandt, and the significance of the divided city for the concept of his New Eastern Policy. As one of Ernst Reuter's successors, Willy Brandt took office as governing mayor in 1957. After the building of the Berlin Wall, his policy of small steps shaped life in divided Berlin, which thus became an important testing ground for New Eastern Policy. In the following we will take a closer look at its contents and consequences. We will also explore the historical layers in the city center and take a closer look at national symbols, memorials and contemporary spaces of political debate.
Participation in the tour is free of charge. Registration is not required.
The meeting point is the Forum Willy Brandt (Behrenstraße 15). The tour ends at the Tränenpalast Berlin (Reichstagufer 17).
