The Soviet Secret Service Prison Leistikowstraße

Online
Führung

There is hardly any other prison that has been preserved as authentically as the Soviet remand prison on Leistikowstraße. Whilst communal cells and sanitary facilities on the upper floors illustrate everyday life in prison in the 1970s, spartan basement cells with simple wooden bunks highlight the harsh conditions of imprisonment in the post-war period. Numerous inscriptions left by prisoners on the walls bear witness to isolation, despair and defiance. In the extensive permanent exhibition, historical photographs, rare original artefacts and modern multimedia stations encourage visitors to engage with the history of the prison in the context of the Cold War. Fifty biographies illustrate the diverse composition of the prisoner population: Nazi perpetrators, actual and alleged spies, Soviet deserters, but also people who were completely uninvolved. The live guided tour offers an insight into this unique place of remembrance and recounts the stories associated with it.
