Freedom, Democracy and the Rule of Law: In Retreat at the United Nations? The world organization between human rights, autocratization and the need for reform
Around the world, human rights, democracy and the rule of law are coming under pressure. Authoritarian regimes are gaining influence, while multilateral institutions face growing scrutiny, including the United Nations itself. Against the backdrop of financial strain, blocked reform processes and democratic setbacks in many parts of the world, the question of whether the multilateral system is fit for the future has become more urgent.
In cooperation with Democracy Without Borders, the German United Nations Association (DGVN) is organizing a panel discussion on the eve of its General Assembly on how human rights, democracy and multilateralism can be defended in an increasingly autocratic world. The event is also part of Berlin Freedom Week.
The discussion will explore whether the UN’s credibility and ability to act have been weakened, and what measures may be appropriate in response. It will also address whether and how the UN itself can become more democratic, representative and agile. Possible reform ideas, such as a parliamentary body within the UN system, will be discussed alongside the question of whether viable alternatives or complementary arrangements are needed, for example an alliance of democratic states.
Panelists will include Carine Kanimba, Secretary General of the World Liberty Congress.
