Flawless Heroes and Passive Victims?

Vor Ort
Vortrag

Public interest in the subject of aid and rescue for persecuted Jews during the Shoah has starkly increased in Europe, the USA, and globally since the 1990s. This also holds true for film as a medium. Steven Spielberg’s 1993 feature film “Schindler’s List” can be seen as a decisive milestone in the rise of global interest in the subject of rescuing Jews. This does not mean, however, that the topic of rescues and aid was not previously present in film.

The lecture will analyze the presentation of aid and rescues for persecuted Jews in cinema and made-for-TV films. It will examine cinema and TV films from Europe and the USA from the 1940s to the present day.

Dr. Nicolas Moll, born in Brussels in 1965, PhD in modern history from the University of Freiburg i. Br., has lived in Sarajevo since 2007. An independent scholar, his interests include war and postwar societies along with memory studies, with a focus on the (post-)Yugoslav space and Franco-German relations.
