Border Stories. Film Footage of the Berlin Wall, 1961–1989
Rarely seen footage brings the history of the Berlin Wall to life: 65 years after its construction, historical films from the collections of the Berlin State Archives trace its story from 1961 to its fall in 1989. Many of these recordings are included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register.
Historian Jens Schöne, Archives Director Sven Kriese and historian Anna Kokenge provide commentary on the film excerpts and explain their historical context. A subsequent panel discussion will explore the footage in greater depth and consider its significance for the remembrance of Germany’s division. The evening will be moderated by Carmen Schwietzer (deputy director of Landesarchiv Berlin).
