"Because we are women." - Afghan women's rights defenders speak about courage and resistance
These are tales of resistance and solidarity, of farewells and settling in – and of the unwavering commitment to a just world: for more than 20 years, Afghan women’s rights activists fought against misogynist structures and empowered women who had experienced sexualised violence. Courageously, they raised their voices for the rights of women in Afghanistan.
When the Taliban seized power again in August 2021, their lives were in danger. From Germany, medica mondiale managed to support all 90 activists and their families in evacuating. Since then, they have continued their fight for women's rights from Germany—with the firm conviction that change is possible when we stand together.
Now, 20 of them are sharing their stories through photos, videos, audios, interviews, and more.
