BAB School Cinema: "The Spies Among Us"

Vor Ort
Filmscreening

The documentary contrasts together employees of the GDR Ministry for State Security and victims of the SED regime. It tells the story of Peter Keup and his efforts to shed light on the unspoken but pressing questions surrounding his family history: In the GDR of the 1970s, he and his sister were successful competitive dancers on the national team. In 1981, he was arrested while attempting to flee to Austria. He was imprisoned in Cottbus on charges of attempting to flee the republic until he was ransomed by the Federal Republic of Germany.

The film, produced by SideXSide Studios in Washington, D.C., offers a rare glimpse into the inner mechanisms of the GDR’s surveillance state, which, through the Stasi, operated a feared and efficient instrument for the suppression and subversion of undesirable individuals.

We invite school classes starting in 10th grade, along with their teachers, to the school film screening of “The Spies Among Us.” The film tells the story of Dr. Peter Keup. The historian and eyewitness was imprisoned in the GDR and was ransomed by the Federal Republic of Germany. The documentary chronicles his quest to uncover his family history and his encounters with former Stasi employees. After the screening, Dr. Peter Keup and BAB historian Dr. Andrea Bahr will be available to answer questions from the students.
